Design Intent

The proposed design intervention, “Assemblage” has grown out of the collaborative site analysis and the ecovention that developed through the study. This analysis was based on a cardinal grid system derived from the existing structures on site and orients with the best viewsheds available. The cut and fill of the contours and flow of water channels are derived from the radial grids, replicating the old irrigation system while bringing about a new conventional reality. The water channels allow the stability of the irrigation system and strategic patching for the site. The design aims to form a naturally stable ‘Assemblage’ of new interventions, existing structures, and natural elements to result in the coined term ‘Mixed reality’. The architecture is conceived as modular assemblies of Cross Laminated timber as the primary material to generate barrier-free, open-planned interior spaces. The modular architecture forms a dialogue with the water channels and pathways by being aligned with them, such that the wooden decks of the modules perch over them and form a network that patches the site.
