Design Intent
We need to transform our cities, not just once but continuously, bridging the gap between where we are now and what can be by developing the capability of updating itself through time so that it is sought after, out of choice, by the new generation. The aim was to design a facility for trade and commerce, lodging–boarding facilities for pilgrims and general tourists along with adaptive reuse of the existing building on site. Ujjain a city with a rich history has been an important religious, educational, and cultural center. Because of Ujjain’s status and its significant religious and cultural image, it has been selected under JNNURM (Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. ) scheme for revitalization apart from this Ujjain city has also been shortlisted under the government of India’s flagship programs of smart cities mission to make its economy more vibrant, competitive and sustainable for future. The design will address the question,” People of a city and their cultural heritage are linked to the present and future of the city. Hence, if a city is on the path to becoming smart, why should its heritage remain static and frozen?”
