Specialty Hospitals are an integral part of the rural healthcare system. Because of their significant contributions to overall community well-being, they are a critical component of communities across rural India. Such hospitals provide services across the continuum of care, from primary care to long-term care. The hospital is designed as a network of small-scale units. It is a core feature to avoid a large, iconic structure covering most of the land. Instead, we wanted to create a village-like typology to make the hospital look more native to the area. The design is an assembly of modular building blocks that contain different functions. Each block connects at the corners to its neighbors and offers a continuous space inside and one linked “urban gardening” area on the roof. After exiting the reception, various colored paths guide the visitors to the different functions of the hospital. I have used the traditional urban thoughts of orientation, zoning, and infrastructure and implemented them in this hospital’s typology.
